Ski Trip 2nd Newsletter

13th August 2009

Dear Parents,

Planning is well underway for our Ski Trip on Wednesday 26th August.   I have had good support from parents who have offered their help with transport and supervision on the day.

A reminder I have only 5 adults that can come in on the cheap rate skiing for the day and I have already filled 3 of these slots (Logan, Dani, Josh) first in first served.  A lot of you have mentioned to me that you want to come but have yet to pay, I also still have a number of children that have yet to pay.

Clothing

The children will be briefed on what suitable clothing to wear but we have included a list so you have time to get it ready.

What to Wear

The most important thing is to be warm, dry and comfortable.  Wool is by far the best.  It can get wet and yet still be warm.

Body

A warm vest, polo neck skivvy or warm shirt, warm jersey, waterproof jacket.

Legs

Wool tights are great with warm, waterproof pants over top.

Head

Woollen hat  (no scarves)

Feet

Woollen socks

Hands

Warm gloves or mittens are essential.  Old woollen socks are good.  Vinyl gloves get wet and cold quickly.

Other Essential Gear

w  A set of dry clothing in case ski gear gets wet

w  A strong factor Sunblock and lip balm

w  Ski goggles or good quality sunglasses

w  Food & Drink  -  We will be taking our lunch with us.  A thermos of hot soup or milo is a good idea.  A drink bottle is ESSENTIAL.  Children can take glucose lollies, chocolate snack bars, muesli bars etc as these a good source of energy.

Supervision

All children will have a ‘buddy’ who they will be responsible for on the day.  There will be an adult responsible for up to four children.

The next and last newsletter will include  -

w  Programme for the day

w  Travelling arrangements

w  Time leaving and arriving back in Taupo

Cost    $8.00 (skis, poles and boots)  $8.50 (Lower mountain pass) $10 (petrol money to be handed to the driver on the day NOT given to me)

If you have any queries regarding this trip, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Dear Parents & Caregivers

A new term has started and like last term it will be a busy one with lots of exciting learning activities and challenges for the children to get involved in.  I hope everyone had a great holiday and batteries have been recharged to get through what has become the coldest months of the year.  Great to see so many enthusiastic children this morning and let’s hope they stay healthy throughout the term.

This letter is to inform you of some of the activities that have been planned for this term. No doubt like most terms other things will crop up along the way.

SKIING:  Room 5 will be skiing for 1 day this year but 2 days have been booked in case of weather.  The days are Week 6 Wednesday 26th August and Week 8 Thursday 10th September. Attached is a separate skiing newsletter which needs to be read carefully.

INQUIRY LEARNING: Our main inquiry, which we will starting soon, will be debating the issue of whether Cadbury’s should be using palm oil products in their chocolates and the effects this may have on the orangutan’s that rely on rain forests for survival.

Fridays elective programme: We will continue with this programme this term and the children get to choose the activities that they want to do for the term.

Other activities coming up and some I haven’t got the dates for so keep an eye out in the school newsletters:

·        School  Cross Country and our top runners will be chosen to represent our school at the Interschool Cross Country competition later in the term

·        Tuwharetoa festival – 16th or 17th September

·        Learning conferences – these will be in week 3 with the late night on Thursday 6th August. Attendance by your child is compulsory.

·        Maori language week 4

·        Interschool technology challenge is also in week 3 having been postponed from last term. William McLean and Jesse Guillemot are our two chosen contestants and we wish them every success with their group in this competition.

·        Tauhara Music Road show – week 3

·        Mathsmatters- week 9 Wednesday 16th September

·        Science roadshow- Monday 10th August

·        NZMaths week – This is going to be New Zealand’s biggest ever online Maths Challenge. We have been asked to join schools around the country to correctly answer 100 million questions in one week. The challenge will be held on the Mathsletics website which all children have access to. We will have a practice week in week 5 and the challenge will be held in week 6. As well as answering maths questions, there will be interactive activities to compete in. Students can earn points for places on the Hall of Fame for being the top school, top class and top student.

·        Spellathon- this will be a fund raising activity by the PTA in week 8

Our class website is still being regularly updated and I know a number of you have been accessing this at home with your children.  A new section addition some of you may have seen is the calendar on our latest newsletter section.  This includes some of the dates mentioned above for happenings this term.  This website is really growing and I know the children are always excited with changes and new things happening here. The children are contributing more and more to this site and the children really enjoy interacting with it.  Our Address:         www.waipahihiprimaryroom5.yolasite.com

Mathletics is going really well and I have seen a huge boost with children’s basic facts which I believe is due partly to this great resource.  We will continue choosing our Mathlete of the week for various challenges within Mathletics.   This term I may send home some basic facts practise sheets and it is expected that the children do reading each night, especially novels.

As you can see we have a pretty full and busy term and I may have missed out some things so remember to check the school newsletters for any dates of events that are coming up. This should come home with the eldest child at school every Thursday.

I look forward to catching up with you all at the Learning conferences in week 3.

Yours sincerely
